Audio Mixers: The Silt; Jeff McMurrich; Sandro Perri. Silt is a collection of three playful Toronto eclectics. Though every band wants to be "tough to pigeonhole," Silt actually is. Beyond the fact that the drummer is also (somehow) the simultaneous bassist, there's a unique concoction of styles here. "Come Back to the Willow" mixes country twang, Jeff Buckley vocals, Jethro Tull flute, light jazz, and funk, and it works beautifully. In fact, the mixture goes down even more smoothly than some of the more straightforward Neil Young-inspired country-rock ballads here. The members share vocal duties, with one sounding more like Young and another more like Will Oldham, but they're united by their vocal looseness and preference for poetic, nature-themed imagery.
