Personnel: Karel Velebny (bass clarinet, tenor saxophone, vibraphone); Jiri Stivin (flute, recorder, alto saxophone); Ludek Svabensky (piano); Karel Vejvoda (bass instrument); Josef Vejvoda (drums, drum).
Whatever was going on in the New York jazz and folk undergrounds during the 1960s, the ESP-Disk label was sure to document it. But aside from recording many American avant-garde artists like Albert Ayler, Frank Wright, and Patty Waters, ESP also gave a number of European free-jazz performers their earliest stateside exposure. In 1968, Karel Velebny (sax, bass clarinet, vibes) was a major figure in the jazz underground of Czechoslovakia, and SHQ was recorded in Germany that year with his quintet. While not quite as outside as many of his American counterparts of the day, SHQ is a nonetheless compelling set of free-bop. With its passages of swinging lyricism and rousing ensemble work, SHQ evokes early and mid-`60's Charles Mingus (albeit with freer solos).|

Rovi

An early (1967) example of European free improvisation, Karel Velebney's SHQ on occasion feels a little tentative in comparison to full-on fearless explorations like the work of Peter Brotzmann or Fred Van Hove. Although there are several free passages, especially on the largely solo opener "The Uhu Sleeps Only During the Day," the rhythm section of pianist Ludek Svabensky, bassist Karel Vejvoda, and drummer Josef Vejvoda largely sticks to basic post-bop rhythms that rein in Velebney's bass clarinet and tenor saxophone and Jiri Stivin's woodwinds. As exploratory post-bop goes, this is often very good stuff, particularly on the closing "Andulko Safarova," which has the graceful, floating quality of one of Gil Evans' more exotic scores, and the swinging "Joachim Is Our Friend." But given the label, time, and place involved, curious listeners might expect something more extreme, and such people might be disappointed. ~ Stewart Mason
