Formed by Dennis Lyxzen upon the dissolution of his former band (the pioneering post-hardcore band Refused), the International Noise Conspiracy took a noticeable step back in time. The band's mix of Marxist rhetoric, punk, and mod-era garage rock placed them at the forefront of the burgeoning garage rock revival. THE CROSS OF MY CALLING continues their evolution, as they've teamed up with superproducer Rick Rubin for a second time. The music heads further in a blazing arena-rock zone, more WHO'S NEXT than A QUICK ONE. "Assassination of Myself" is muscular and anthemic, straight off of 1970s rock radio, while the eight-minute title track is a massive brooding epic. The clean production and dynamic songwriting have left the garage in the dust, as the Noise Conspiracy are clearly aspiring to something bigger and more populist. "Boredom of Safety" and the red-blooded "Child of God" could easily catch on with FM radio.
