While their early '80s singles, collected on Acute Records' release MEMORY SPAN, traded in angular, pop-savvy guitar rock similar to that of The Soft Boys or The Only Ones, The Lines' pair of full-length releases, both included on FLOOD BANK, found the group incorporating the production techniques of dub as well as the fractured guitar breakdowns of avant-garde acts like Orange Juice into their already eclectic sound. The heady experimentalism and near psychedelic aesthetic of tracks like "Instincticide" and "Stripe" neatly anticipated the innovations of avant-pop outfits like XTC and The Cocteau Twins. FLOOD BANK represents a fascinating lost chapter in the history of English post punk.
