Though he's rarely given any indication that he was musically inclined, it turns out that Kevin Costner is part of that long string of actors who also dabble in music. In fact, the debut album by Kevin Costner and Modern West isn't the actor fronting a bunch of anonymous session musicians but the rebirth of a band that he and lead guitarist John Coinman had in Los Angeles in the 1980s. MODERN WEST is an unfussy album of old-fashioned country rock of the type that was so popular around Laurel Canyon in the late 1960s and early '70s. Echoes of the Eagles, Gram Parsons, Michael Nesmith, and others percolate through these 12 charming, unpretentious tracks.
