The Dears: George Donoso III (drums).
Personnel: Murray Lightburn (guitar, organ, Mellotron, omnichord, keyboards, synthesizer, bass guitar); Adrian Popovich, Patrick Krief, Robert Bonnie (guitar); Marika Anthony Shaw, Jade McNelis (violin); William Lightburn (saxophone); Matt Watkins, Evan Cranley, Chris Seligman (brass); Natalia Yanchak (piano, Clavinet); Roberto Arquilla (bass guitar).
Additional personnel: Every Kid Choir.
Audio Mixers: Murray Lightburn; Roberto Arquilla.
With this album, Murray Lightburn continues to move away from the sparer Brit-pop that dominated his band's earliest work, emphasizing the grandeur and bombast that was always lurking in the background. On opener "Disclaimer," Lightburn calls out to "the Son of God," and from there he tackles capitalism ("Money Babies") and war ("Missiles"). The general feeling of unrest and upheaval is unsurprising considering that the actual recording of MISSLES was plagued by turmoil and a rejiggering of the lineup. In fact, Lightburn initially planned it as a solo record, and his emphatic, Morrissey-ish croon is still the main draw. MISSILES remains, indisputably, a Dears record, and its bigness of sound will especially please fans who were happy with where the band went on 2006's GANG OF LOSERS.

Alternative Press - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The Dears remain best when Lightburn and founding keyboardist Natalia Yanchak surround his keening vocals with epic constructions, as on the gorgeous, saxophone-assisted opener 'Disclaimer'..." Mojo - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Dears' linchpin Murray Lightburn continues to enthral...his heartfelt, inventive arrangements testament to many questing hours in the studio." Clash - 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he title track exemplifies the overall sound -- sweet, unembellished notes working themselves up into an emotional and aural crescendo." Blender - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The languid dream sound is heavy on guitar fuzz, gauzy horn charts, plinky piano, somber organ..." Magnet - "On tracks such as the Roxy Music-like 'Disclaimer,' the gospel-tinged 'Saviour' and the the title track, Lightburn spits out his rawest, nerviest work to date." Alternative Press (p.138) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The Dears remain best when Lightburn and founding keyboardist Natalia Yanchak surround his keening vocals with epic constructions, as on the gorgeous, saxophone-assisted opener 'Disclaimer'..."
