Personnel: Little Jimmy Scott (recorder); Wes Montgomery (guitar); Jerry Sanfino, Kriby Alexander, Curtis Lowe, Jerry Jerome, Johnny Board, Billy Williams , Bobby Plater (alto saxophone); Lonnie Shaw, Stan Getz , Thompson, George Berg (tenor saxophone); Clarence Williams, Danny Bank , Lionel Hampton (baritone saxophone); Jimmy Wonick, Gil Askey, Harold Baker, Al Grey, Paul Lee , Taft Jordan, Benny Powell (trumpet); Jerome Richardson, Kai Winding, Tyree Glenn, John Saunders (trombone); Doug Duke (piano, organ); Ed Swanson (piano); John Simmons , Peck Morrison, Roy Johnson (bass instrument); Elise Bartee, John Hunt , Herb Lovelle (drum). Jimmy Scott is rightly considered by many to be one of the finest jazz singers ever. Actor Joe Pesci said he learned to act by watching Little Jimmy Scott sing when he was growing up. This set includes some his first sessions, from 1950-1952. The earliest four sets feature Scott accompanied by Lionel Hampton & His Orchestra. "I Wish I knew" is positively riveting as Hampton's vibes dance around Scott's singing, and Doug Duke's organ lays a soft blanket underneath it all. The previously unissued (one of three such tracks in this collection) "Alone With a Memory" is a real gem. The attention that came to Jimmy Scott (the "Little" was only in use in the first decade of his career) in the '90s brought forth a series of powerfully emotional new recordings. Among these are DREAM, ALL THE WAY, HEAVEN, and HOLDING BACK THE YEARS, all of which are highly recommended. The renewed interest also allowed for well-considered reissues such as this, which prove that Scott's emotional and technical finesse was there from the outset.

商品の紹介

One could write a book about all the abuse Jimmy Scott suffered over the years. From being ridiculed and mocked because of his effeminate qualities to being neglected by labels for much of his career, the singer has often had it rough. But Scott is a survivor who never lost his talent or his charisma: he was a compelling singer in his youth, and he was still compelling when he was in his early seventies. Everybody's Somebody's Fool, a 1999 release, takes us back to Scott's twenties (when he was still known as Little Jimmy Scott) and focuses on his work with the big bands of Lionel Hampton, Billy Taylor, and Lucky Thompson at Decca from 1950-1952. Subsequently, he would become a victim of bad A&R and bad marketing at other labels, but this CD demonstrates that the early '50s were a highly creative period for him. Heavily influenced by Billie Holiday, Scott pours a tremendous amount of soul and feeling into Duke Ellington's "Solitude," "Wheel of Fortune," "I Wish I Knew," and the title song (which shouldn't be confused with the Connie Francis hit). But as strong as Holiday's influence is, it's also clear that Scott was quite unique and distinctive himself. One of the things that made him unique was the fact that he sounded like he could be a woman; and ironically, this was something that worked to his advantage creatively resulted in a lot of cruelty off stage. Jazz singing doesn't get much more convincing or personal than what you'll find on this superb collection. ~ Alex Henderson
