The third compilation in the Basswerk Sessions series is a doozy: a three-disc set dedicated to three different strains of drum'n'bass. Those three different strains may not sound very different to all but the most informed and attentive fans: frankly, if you were to shuffle all the tracks on this compilation and then ask your nearest clubber to identify which ones belong to the Chill-Session, the Groove-Session, and the Technik-Session discs, he'd probably only get them about half right. Granted, it's easier to tell the Technik-Session tracks from the Chill-Session ones -- Cytech's "Fear" has a weird and creepy ambience that isn't really very "chill," while the reggae-inflected vocals on Big Bud's "Live a Little" and Mika's sweet vocals on "Star" would have stuck out a bit on the Technik disc. But good luck figuring out what separates the Groove category from the Chill one: both discs feature lots of chilled-out grooves as well as lots of energy, from the Green Man's excellent "So Bad" (featuring some very nimble-tongued rapping by MC Remedy) to Naibu's sweetly funky "Dive." Then there are "Play It" by Camo & Krooked, possibly the first drum'n'bass track ever to make extensive use of samples from the film Casablanca, and the Green Man's "Easy," which actually incorporates a brief 6/8 interlude. All in all, a very fun and satisfying collection. ~ Rick Anderson
