Free-jazz figurehead Peter Brotzmann is joined on this duo date by cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm (who also provides electronic textures). Brotzmann has been recording bracing avant-garde music since 1968's MACHINE GUN, and THE BRAIN OF THE DOG IN SECTION, recorded and released in 2008, shows no signs that Brotzmann is softening his aesthetic.
The album consists of three lengthy improvisations that feature Brotzmann on his trademark tenor sax, as well as alto and clarinet. His interactions with Lonberg-Holm are alternately fierce, entrancing, frenetic, and intricate, yet are absorbing at every turn. This is first-rate free jazz, balancing years of seasoned musicianship with sharply focused fire.|
