The talented, difficult-to-categorize electronica artist Shawn Lee can be counted on to create surprising, enjoyable, often psychedelic hybrids of disparate styles (a few of his regular touchstones include jazz, groove, lounge, and noir-ish film music). Lee collaborates with the ever-mysterious Clutchy Hopkins on 2008's CLUTCH OF THE TIGER, creating a listening experience that sounds like a postmodern take on a 1970s period movie. Soul-jazz grooves, horns, and flutes create the building blocks, but it's Lee and Hopkins's future-directed, hip-hop-flavored sensibility that makes it interesting.
