Metallica suffered some combination of shame and humility in the wake of the muddled album St. Anger and the documentary film Some Kind of Monster, so they ditched longtime producer Bob Rock in favor of Rick Rubin, patron saint of veteran rockers looking to get back to basics, for Death Magnetic. Metallica's basics are pretty complex: intertwined guitar riffs, frenetic solos, and thunderous double bass drums stitched together as intricate seven-minute suites. Death Magnetic bounces the band back to the days before Bob Rock, sounding as if it could come after ...And Justice for All. 　リック・ルービンがプロデュースを手掛け、前作『St. Anger』のレコーディング後に加入したベーシストのロバート・トゥルジーロが初めて制作に携わった一枚ということでも話題のニュー・アルバム『Death Magnetic』は、スラッシュ・メタル史上に残る名盤『Master Of Puppets』（86年）を意識して制作された、という前情報が入ってきていた。だが、個人的にはこれを同作の〈2008年版〉と呼ぶことには異議を唱えたい。すべての曲が長尺の大作であり、前作ではほとんど聴けなかったカーク・ハメットのギター・ソロが復活していることから、〈Master～〉を引き合いに出されることに対して理解はできるのだが、音の質感と各楽曲の成り立ちが決定的に違う。ラフな感触のサウンドは、どちらかというと90年代の『Load』や『Reload』に近い。そして、冒頭から破壊力抜群のファスト・チューンが並んでいるが、それらの楽曲構成は〈Master～〉のように完璧に構築されたものというより、前作にも通じる、巨大化したバンドの無尽蔵なエネルギーが暴発した結果の産物という印象を受けた。〈落ち目のバンドによる過去に売れたアルバムの続編〉というノリではなく、賛否両論を呼んだ前作を経たからこその、〈イマ〉のメタリカ・サウンドがここにはある。本作を聴いて、彼らは過去の焼き直し的なアルバムは決して作らない、そして常に時代の先端を行く傑作を生み落とし続ける――という2つの事実を再確認させられた次第。怪物バンドの進化はまだ止まらない。

　個人的な話で恐縮なんすけど、リアルタイムでは87年発表のEP『The $5.98 E.P. Garage Days Re-Revisited』、88年作『...And Justice For All』あたりにフガフガ言ってたくらいで、この原稿を書くためにその他のアルバムを一気聴きしたようなメタル門外漢。メタリカ対岸の火事状態と言ってもらっても差し支えない超ペーペー野郎なんすが、そんなオレにでもわかりました、この『Death Magnetic』が本気でどエラいブツだってことは。ついでにイントロを聴いた瞬間からピンときた次第。なにゆえか?　それは、もうとにかくメムバー及びリック・ルービンによって生み出されたメチャンコいかつい強烈な音!音!音!　この鳴ってる音すべての〈純度〉が尋常じゃなく凄い。あれだけのアルバムをさんざん作ってきたにも関わらず、過去最高の純度。120％メタリカそのものの塊。そして、これが不純物ゼロゆえに、笑っちゃうくらい凄い!という感覚を通り越して……、もはや美しすぎ!!　この美しさの前では音楽のジャンルなどなんの意味もなさないはずで。ムニャムニャ……。だがしかし、そんな息を呑む崇高な芸術品だけに終わるわけではありまへん。この最高のスラッシュ・メタル・アルバムは、その塊でもって終始ブン殴りまくり!　となると、結果どうなるか。ええ、この超ペーペー野郎がすべての約束ごとをブッチ切って、メタリカのバンドTシャツを猛ダッシュで買いに行きたくなっちまうような、そんな激烈にピュアな衝動が湧き上がるわけです!!　もう最高に良い気分。聴かないヤツはどうかしてる!くらい言っちゃおう。 ははは。以上です!!!
