Telefon Tel Aviv: Charles Cooper, Joshua Eustis.
Personnel: John Rustis (various instruments).
On their first two albums, Chicago-based Telefon Tel Aviv's immaculately produced glitchtronica managed to shoehorn fractured snippets of modern R&B and ambient electronica into a skeleton of complex, IDM-styled drum programming. While always forward-thinking in their approach, TTA's modernist genre rejiggers rarely approached anything resembling classic song form. IMMOLATE YOURSELF, the duo's third album, represents a big, bold step toward the stylized classicism and emotional heft of `80s synth-pop outfits like Depeche Mode and New Order. Released on techno-chanteuse Ellen Allien's label, Bpitch Control, IMMOLATE's sound is worlds away from the catalog's frigid, Teutonic aesthetic. Warm, textural, and evocative appears to be the order of the day, and TTA's newfound emotional cogency lends new dimension to vocal-led tracks such as the shoegazesque opener, "The Birds." The group's turn toward pensive synth-driven melancholia is especially evident on the stirring "Helen of Troy." Dominated by prickly synth arpeggios and a smear of ghostly vocals, its heart-wrenching tones were made all the more poignant after the album's release on news of TTA member Charlie Cooper's sudden death.
