The second of two "complete" two-fers from the French RCA label in its sadly discontinued Jazz Tribune series starts off with two alternate versions of Hines' piano solos, and then includes all of his orchestra's recordings from December 1940 through 1942 plus two numbers from 1945 and four more Hines solos. During this period, both Budd Johnson and Franz Jackson starred on tenor and, although many of the musicians were lesser-known players (other than the increasingly popular vocalist Billy Eckstine), the orchestra was one of the top swing big bands around. High points include the piano solos, "Jelly Jelly" (Eckstine's first hit), "Windy City Jive," "The Father Jumps," and "Second Balcony Jump." This highly recommended set has unfortunately become difficult to find. ~ Scott Yanow
