After 2006's TEN SILVER DROPS, indie rock outfit the Secret Machines replaced the departed vocalist and guitarist Ben Curtis with guitarist Phil Karnats, but fans worried about an overhaul in the band's sound will be pleased to know the Machines stay their course on this 2008 self-titled release. Like DROPS, THE SECRET MACHINES shows the influence of `60s psychedelia, post punk, and arena-sized, riff-ready alternative rock. For the most part, the album is dark, slow, and atmospheric, laying on thick helpings of sludgy drums, distorted guitar, and swirling feedback. Opener and lead single "Atomic Heels," one of the album's strongest tracks, adds pop hooks to its wall of guitars for a new-wave-flavored gem. Yet all of THE SECRET MACHINES slams and floats with the crafted impact fans of these experimental rockers have come to expect.
