In spite of the title, not all of the sides on this generous 25-track collection are actually R&B, but include a range of songs in several styles, from swing, jazz and jump blues to pure vocal pop, all of which were popular in urban American in 1949. Highlights (and there are several) include Sticks McGhee's "Drinkin' Wine Spo Dee O Dee," Billy Eckstine's "Fools Rush In," Jimmy Witherspoon's "Ain't No Business If I Do," and a wonderful and definitive "Sweet Georgia Brown" by Brother Bones & His Shadows. ~ Steve Leggett
