Golden Smog are a relatively long-lived Minneapolis supergroup including members of the Jayhawks, Wilco, Soul Asylum, and others at various times. While the band had four albums and an EP under its belt by the time of this best-of collection's release, STAY GOLDEN, SMOG focuses strictly on the band's first two Rykodisc releases. Like the band's sound over the years, the anthology tends more towards the rootsy, organic folk-and-country-tinged rock of the Jayhawks than the harder-edged Soul Asylum style (with a couple of exceptions), though a number of the tunes bear intriguing melodic twists that bespeak the pop ambitions of Smoggers from both camps. Hardcore fans will be attracted by the presence of two bonus cuts, including a cover of Brian Wilson's "Love and Mercy."
