One of no less than three studio albums released by Lee "Scratch" Perry in 2008, SCRATCH CAME, SCRATCH SAW, SCRATCH CONQUERED was largely overshadowed by the Andrew W.K.-produced REPENTANCE and THE MIGHTY UPSETTER, his album with U.K. mix master Adrian Sherwood. While its appearance wasn't met with as much fanfare as either of those efforts, the reggae legend's collaboration with multi-instrumentalist John Saxon (whom Perry worked with on his 2006 album, THE END OF AN AMERICAN DREAM) is not without its own laidback charms. Scratch, now 72, sounds a tad the worse for wear rattling off his trademark stream-of-conscious rhymes, but his undeniable humor and lively spoken asides carry the day on this slight but enjoyable set of toasts.

Unlike Repentance with Andrew W.K. as producer and The Mighty Upsetter with Adrian Sherwood behind the boards, Scratch Came, Scratch Saw, Scratch Conquered is a misfire with Perry and multi-instrumentalist John Saxon failing in the chemistry department.
