On their sophomore release, dance outfit Sneaky Sound System return with a surprising set of grooves. This is '80s dance music at its core, but '80s dance music done by people paying attention. The details are where the magic is here, from singer Connie Mitchell's incredible facility with a variety of phrasings to the mix of electro-funk and disco-themed thumps put together by producer Angus McDonald. The music is infectious, forcing foot taps from the most staid of listeners. Where other dance groups will either go full-force into the standards of house music (the usual thumping bass, the minor tweaks, the obligatory Auto-Tune usage) or go fully retro in a more aping fashion, these guys handle the retro influences reverentially, but incorporate them into a newer, higher-energy format that still holds on to the idea that something musically interesting can happen in dance music, instead of just using it as a relatively soulless backdrop for a club night. This dance music isn't just a means to an end, but an end in itself. ~ Adam Greenberg
