In 2003, cult status R&B singer Howard Tate made his first recording in 30 years with A PORTRAIT OF HOWARD. BLUE DAY (2008) bests its predecessor and proves that Tate's return was no fluke--the singer is more commanding here than ever. Suffused with a deep blues and gospel feel, BLUE DAY is the kind of record rainy Sundays were made for: intense, earthy, and brimming with soulful fervor. Fleshed out by a killer backing band and the superb songwriting of Jon Tiven (who also produced and played guitar on the album), BLUE DAY is a fine record, but it's Tate's textured voice and seasoned style that make it burn with inner fire.
