While 2006 was a busy year for the Walkmen, with A HUNDRED MILES OFF and their take on Harry Nilsson's PUSSY CATS released within six months of each other, both projects received mixed receptions, denting the gilded indie-rock reputation that the NYC group cemented on 2004's BOWS AND ARROWS. Clearly, raspy-voiced frontman Hamilton Leithauser and the lads have taken corrective measures, since YOU & ME easily slips into the woozy, melancholy aesthetic of ARROWS and its underrated predecessor, EVERYONE WHO PRETENDED TO LIKE ME IS GONE. From the swaggering "In the New Year" to the propulsive "Postcards from Tiny Islands" to the dreamy "Red Moon," this is top-shelf Walkmen, well suited to both fans and the uninitiated.
