Giant Sand mastermind Howe Gelb has been a stalwart desert-rocker since the mid-1980s, turning out a long string of sonic tumbleweeds full of dusty atmosphere and cracked Americana. On his 20th album, the Tom Waits of the mesa continues to refine his singular approach; lonesome piano ballads, Captain Beefheart-esque deconstructed blues, reverb-laden spy-movie fodder, Johnny Cash-on-downers country twang, it's all part of Gelb's arsenal, and his low, laconic singing is the connective tissue holding it all together.
