Tom Verlaine's third solo album was the 1982 successor to the previous year's DREAMTIME. It is again a worthy companion to the albums that he released with his trailblazing band of the '70s, Television. From the angular guitar riffs of the opening "Present Arrived" to the lush romanticism of "Postcard From Waterloo" (still rife with dazzling Stratocaster riffs), this set shows all of his strengths as a writer, guitarist, and singer. The title song is a stunning tour-de-force that couples a battle-weariness with a sense of hope. At more than six minutes, it uses every second of its length to accomplish its slow and profound build. The album's closer, "Days on the Mountain", clocks in at nearly 10 minutes in length and finds guitars dancing around one another with grace and ease over a simple rhythmic backdrop.|
