The first album from this band made up of Pretty Girls Make Graves and Blood Brothers members sounds, indeed, like an equal mixture of those bands' sounds. The insanity and vocal yelps of the Blood Brothers are tempered by the more straightforward punk-pop velocity of PGMG. Johnny Whitney's vocals screech and waver, giving the songs an alien energy despite the typical unintelligibility of his lyrics. "Highways of Gold" opens the record in a relatively comfortable vein, but elsewhere the band experiments with multiple styles, from the near-waltz of "Bonetrees and a Broken Heart" to the D.C. post-hardcore moves of "Jaguar Pirates." "Humans Evolve Into Skyscrapers" even flirts with hair metal and "Jump"-era Van Halen keyboard cheese, and on "My Organ Sounds Like...," Whitney channels his inner Prince.
