RAWN IN BASIC (2008), the third album by Lecce, Italy-based multi-instrumentalist and programmer Andrea Mangia (performing under the name Populous) features boy-voiced New York singer Michael McGuire (aka Short Stories) on vocals. The happy result is an opening up, both musically and emotionally, of Mangia's music. The vintage beats and textures, which on Mangia's previous albums had exuded a 1950s Raymond Scott-kind of warmth, glow even more on DRAWN IN BASIC, as does McGuire's singing, which, with its soft, dry touches and clipped syllables, recalls most closely Kings of Convenience vocalist Erik Glambek Boe.
