They weren't around long enough to amass much of a discography, but Mars was at the vanguard of New York City's late-1970s No Wave scene. They were first heard on a handful of tracks from the now-legendary, Eno-produced NO NEW YORK compilation, alongside peers like DNA and Lydia Lunch. Those tracks, plus nearly everything else the band recorded in its short lifetime, is here in all its discordant, clanging, banging, post-punk glory. It's easy to hear the seeds of bands like Sonic Youth being sown here. While the previous 78+ collection has a few more tracks, the fidelity is much better here (and original mixes restored); how much that means under such clangorous conditions is up to the listener.
