Dizzy Gillespie's incorporation of Latin rhythms and styles into modern jazz was one of his primary achievements (second only perhaps to his technical innovations in the bebop vocabulary). When Gillespie added conguera Chano Pozo to his orchestra in the late 1940s, he helped establish a template for Afro-Cuban jazz in the U.S. LATINO: ANTHOLOGY 1947-1957 covers Diz's output with his orchestra during this influential period. In addition to covering jazz classics in Latinized style ("A Night in Tunisia," "Caravan"), Gillespie and Co. add their own classics to the canon with "Cubana Bop," "Manteca," and others. The jazz icon's spectacular trumpet playing and band leadership make these dense, danceable, and always fun recordings shine.
