Along with Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet was one of the very first jazz stars. Bechet boasted a tone on clarinet and (especially) soprano saxophone with a scarily wide vibrato--he sounded like no one else, and few have ever come close to his unique style. ANTHOLOGY is a cross-section of his recordings covering virtually his entire career, mixing classic New Orleans jazz and swing with some good-time vocals. The lineup of musicians accompanying him is a Who's Who of pre-bebop jazz: Earl Hines, Red Allen, Baby Dodds, even bop legend-to-be Kenny Clarke. People with an interest in early jazz owe it to themselves to hear Bechet--this ANTHOLOGY is a fine place to start.
