Recording information: 1967. This collection features the original tracks recorded for Captain Beefheart's second album, which was released after much music-biz maneuvering in a radically altered form--psychedelic effects added--as STRICTLY PERSONAL. It's unclear whether the revamped version that initially saw release was sanctioned by Beefheart or not, but whatever the case, the original sessions can be heard here in all their glory: barbed, angular, mutant blues full of raw inspiration and ragged invention. Much of this material has been made available in various places before, but gathered together here these tracks offer a striking portrait of the Captain's early Howlin' Wolf-meets-Frank Zappa phase.
