The range and exceptional artistry that experimental composer and multi-instrumentalist Trevor Dunn has brought to his collaborations with Mike Patton in Mr. Bungle, and his various jazz and rock ensembles, is also evident in his film music. Released on John Zorn's Tzadik label, FOUR FILMS collects cues from four Dunn-penned scores, including work for the films V.O., DANDELION MAN, WHITE NOISE, and GLENDALE BLVD. Given Dunn's other projects, one might expect noise assaults and free-jazz freak-outs, and there is certainly an element of left-field surprise in this music. But what impresses is Dunn's subtlety and nuance in passages that range from the delicate and beautiful to the eerily evocative. This comes highly recommended to fans of Dunn's other projects and Tzadik releases, and to those who enjoy inventive film music in general.
