Most blues enthusiasts rank Memphis Minnie among the great blues artists of all time, and she can certainly claim the title of the genre's most accomplished female artist. Both as a singer and a guitarist, Minnie recorded over 200 records in her long and distinguished career. HOODOO LADY (1933-1937) collects the best of Minnie's sides during a period that found in her in Chicago's burgeoning blues scene recording and performing with her then husband, Kansas Joe McCoy. The era is a high watermark, and Minnie's playing and singing on tracks like "I Hate to See the Sun Go Down" and "I'm a Bad Luck Woman" are as indelible as Robert Johnson's slide or Skip James's moan. On another standout, "Ice Man (Come On Up)," she proclaims "I'm gonna strut my stuff," and no one hearing these tracks could argue with that. For completists, this compilation includes previously unreleased material.
