t's a strange thing when a band mining nostalgic sounds of past generations also engenders their own canonical significance. But nearly 20 years and some major label ups-and-downs on, Sloan--Canada's primary power-pop export before the New Pornographers unzipped their goods--are forging ahead in their maturity while still representing a blast from the past. "Witch's Wand" strips things down to a piano-melody gallop that sounds a few bars askew from the Kinks' "Lola," before bridging to a chorus with a more contemporary set of handclaps and blissful vocal hiccups. Introspective lyrics like those on "Burn For It" and the AM radio-ready "Living The Dream" contribute to PARALLEL PLAY's sounding as much like an update on the guys' newfound elder statesman status as it does a flawlessly executed turn-back-the-clock-affair. By looking back with equal deftness to Big Star, the British Invasion, and their own imprinted Sloan style, these Canucks have prolonged not just the legacy of their influences, but their own legacy as well.
