The latest convolution in the long and twisted saga of Gong, Acid Mothers Gong ignited in 2003 as a primarily improvisatory spectacle -- which may or may not be a good thing. Beautifully filmed at the 2006 Unconventional Gong gathering in Amsterdam, the six tracks here naturally echo the pastures seeded on the team's studio debut album, but of course it wanders far, far from that as well. Acid Mothers Gong concoct a series of soundscapes that dance between inflammatory jazz-prog (the opening "Teapot in Ruins," a showcase for drummer Yoshida Tatsuda) and on to the psych guitar manipulations of "Tsunami Magick," but classic Gong lovers will be drawn first to the poetic "Invocation of the Interior Motive," as Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth emerge to cackle, intone, and, of course, space whisper through the echoes and trickles of sound. Smyth's eerie "Invisible," and the hyper-atmospheric "Voices" maintain the magical quotient, before "Asteroid Ointment" takes us back to the days of "Fohat Digs Holes in Space," with wild guitar and wired rhythms on a collision course with eternity. Yet the music is only half of the experience, as the film work and special effects take you just as far as the band, to capture a performance of literally interstellar dimensions. ~ Dave Thompson
