International model, movie star, and legitimate counterculture pop icon Twiggy tried to capitalize on her runway and "Golden Globe"-winning screen success in the late '60s/early '70s with a series of curious albums, all of which featured the starlet singing three or four flowery pop songs that were buffered by jazzy, occasionally goofy instrumental numbers by an industry combo called the Silver Screen Syncopators. Recorded in 1967, Britain's First Top Model is a reissue of 1972's Twiggy & the Girlfriends, the first of three full-length albums. Falling somewhere in between Margo Guryan, Mary Hopkin, Marianne Faithfull, and a heavily orchestrated Nico, it's a slight record (Twiggy's voice is adequate, yet lacks the confidence of her musical peers) that nevertheless dutifully oozes enough late-'60s nostalgia to warrant the occasional rainy day spin, preferably in the company of a full ashtray, a bottle of brandy, and an amorous friend. ~ James Christopher Monger
