ALMOST ALONE, one of Atkins' best albums, features Atkins alone with his six-string. A heartwarming release, this is also one of Atkins' most intimate. And while the title is derived from the fact that Atkins has guests sit in with him on three tracks, this album is really a personal endeavor. Indeed, it is serene, introspective and musically sincere.
Many of Atkins' '80s and '90s releases highlighted the talents of friends and colleagues such as Mark Knopfler and Tommy Emmanuel. However, it's nice to hear Mr. Guitar all by himself, displaying his virtuosic, lyrical, and sensitive style. On "I Still Write Your Name in the Snow," we hear a happy-go-lucky Atkins. Recorded live, the lyrics are as humorous as they are sentimental. In fact, he gets the audience chuckling after each verse. The high point of ALMOST ALONE, however, is "Ave Maria." On this traditional hymn, Atkins plays with a Spartan sense of grace. In truth, he proves that simplicity can be more powerful than the kind of musical exhibitionism that some guitarists hide behind.
