Hardcore veterans H2O haven't released an album in years, and during the layoff, members have started families and gotten involved with other projects, like Juliette Lewis's band. But old-school, New York-style hardcore in the mode of Gorilla Biscuits and Youth of Today still has a hungry audience, and H2O remain its evangelists. NOTHING TO PROVE picks up right where the band left off, their blend of steel and concrete hardcore smoothed out with SoCal punk melodies. Singer Toby Morse still barks out accusations of "fakeness" to all comers and sings secular hymns to the power of positivity. "Still Here" may well be the last recorded instance of straight-edge boosterism, and "What Happened?" laments the thinned-out herd of hardcore true believers. H2O is a throwback without a doubt, but when there's no one else working in the old style, it can also be a breath of fresh air.
