Dark Chocolate is a smooth jazz outfit in the vein of Spyro Gyra and the Rippingtons. Given that Dark Chocolate bassist Kim Stone played in both those bands, any similarity just might be inevitable. Yet on ISLAND GYPSY, Dark Chocolate's debut, the music also has a decided Caribbean feel. The presence of bajo sexto, marimba, flute, and auxiliary percussion lends the set a native, polyrhythmic feel, yet the group interplay, the guitar synths, and the shimmering sheen of the production will also make this debut familiar to long-time smooth-jazz aficionados.
