As the ultimate British folk and folk-rock imprint of the late '70s, Free Reed kept alive during punk's peak the intersection of traditional and contemporary British music started in the late '60s by Fairport Convention. This installment, GOING SPARE, finds star session accordionist John Kirkpatrick following up his 1972 debut JUMP AT THE SUN. Kirkpatrick, a sometime member of Richard Thompson's backing band and Steeleye Span, fuses Morris dance-like accordion and concertina rhythms with a pub-friendly British spirit and some modern flare--most notably, on the full-tilt "What Do You Do in the Day?" as Kirkpatrick collaborates with punk quartet the Pork Dukes. Fairport fans will find Richard Thompson, Dave Mattacks, and Simon Nicol accompanying Kirkpatrick on the bonus tracks, "King Neptune's Lament" and "Jogging Along with me Reindeer."
