Jack Teagarden/Jack Teagarden & His Orchestra: Jack Teagarden (trombone). First the good: this Acrobat collection of material by Jack Teagarden & His Orchestra has absolutely great sound. Budget collections of this sort usually come from very dubious sources, or from radio transcriptions, or the cubbyhole of majors looking to exploit some minor catalog material they've had sitting around for decades. The sound on this set is dynamite, especially given the prominence of Teagarden's vocals. The music itself was recorded in the 1940s, and is a little-known recording of nothing but the hits: "Basin Street Blues," "King Porter Stomp," "Royal Garden Blues," "China Boy," and others. There is also a beautiful reading of "Sophisticated Lady" included. The bad news is the lack of documentation other than the year. In other words, there are no personnel listed. For those who are more than simply casual listeners, or are collectors, there is plenty of guesswork to be done. That said, for anyone interested in the music of one of the true jazz greats from the music's earliest days, this performance is a real treat that won't bite your wallet very hard. ~ Thom Jurek
