Solo piano blues from the '20s and '30s can be hard to find past the big-name artists of stride and boogie-woogie. These 12 cuts were chosen from recordings for the Paramount label between 1927 and 1932, for sure the predawn age of recorded African-American music expressionism. You get classic material from the immortal Meade "Lux" Lewis and Cow Cow Davenport, and two apiece from more obscure keyboardists such as Henry Brown, Blind Leroy Garnett, and Will Ezell. The production values, as you might expect for this era, range from cleaned-up to very fuzzy and hissy. Beginning archivists or historians should be pleased with this compilation of roots boxcar and brothel music, the beginnings of a grand tradition in American jazz. ~ Michael G. Nastos
