Although Subtle is frequently categorized as a hip-hop group, their sensibility is much more closely aligned with experimental indie rock. Dense sonic collages are the keynote for EXITING ARM, the group's seventh album, as Doseone's complex, associative rapping is offset with layered melodic vocals and a shifting array of deeply psychedelic textures. EXITING ARM is full of proper songs too, but the songs change shape and fragment to create a work that is joyful in its creative abandon, though dark and often ominous in tone. An absorbing if sometimes disorienting listen, EXITING ARM is a wild, unique ride from one of the underground's most creative outfits.
