Bing Crosby not only loved the Great American Songbook, he debuted a fair number of its selections, being as he was the prime male voice on radio and records when the Songbook was at its peak during the 1930s and '40s. (He co-wrote a few too, with a pair of his close songwriting teams: Victor Young & Ned Washington and Roy Turk & Fred E. Ahlert.) The Collectors' Choice compilation Sings the Great American Songbook may not include his best-known standards, or even a hit recording among its ranks, but its round-up of mid-'50s-era recordings from Crosby radio shows (either The Ford Road Show or The Bing Crosby Show) portrays America's most popular vocalist singing his most popular songs in an excellent setting. Recorded with a very small group (led by Buddy Cole), Crosby sinks his mellifluous tenor deep into this classic material -- "You Took Advantage of Me," "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," "'S Wonderful," "Get Happy," "I've Got a Crush on You" -- with evident relish. It may not be the first choice for those who want to hear the Bing Crosby sides that took America by storm, but it's a wonderful collection for those who've heard all the hits and need to hear more. (Note: Virtually all of this material also appeared on the mammoth seven-disc compilation, The Bing Crosby CBS Radio Recordings 1954-1956; the four tracks not present there, the ones from the Ford show, are previously unreleased.) ~ John Bush
