Born in Germany in the 1960s and 1970s at the same time as the hippie countercultural movement in the States, Krautrock--originally a derogatory name coined by the British press--combined traditional rock instrumentation with a similar, though more radical, taste for experimentation. Like their American counterparts, Krautrock bands were influenced by psychedelia, and embraced an ambient sound, but fused this aesthetic with the electronic avant-garde.
