Live in the Ozone is a document of "mysterious" origin. Its first incarnation (of which this is a track-for-track replica) appeared on the Italian Akarma label. This one is on Purple Pyramid, apparently a subsidiary of the rather inconsistent (to be kind) Cleopatra imprint; the booklet says that the tapes were licensed from the San Juan Music Group, a music and movie rights licensing outfit in New Jersey. As for the music, it's all killer, no filler. And there's a lot of it: 21 tracks with virtually every major favorite a Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen fan would want. The lineup is a classic one -- Commander Cody, Billy C. Farlow, Bill Kirchen, John Tichy, Bruce Barlow, Lance Dickerson, Andy Stein, and pedal steel boss Bobby Black -- heard during the Lost in the Ozone tour in support of the band's first Warner album. The sound on this set varies from excellent to very good, suggesting that these tracks were chosen from a variety of sources. Besides the music, the disc comes with a cool button and a small sticker. Fanatics have to have this, and those who are curious will find this a solid introduction to the rowdy, drunken, yet utterly sophisticated barroom stomp, swing, and honky tonk that were Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen at their live best. ~ Thom Jurek
