On his first solo album, THE LAST TYCOON, Peter Moren of the lauded Swedish indie-rock trio Peter Bjorn and John unveils a laid-back folk-influenced set. These 10 spare tracks provide an excellent showcase for the singer/guitarist's slightly raspy, John Lennon-like vocals and subdued yet assured songcraft, as best revealed on the wistful "Tell Me in Time" and the plaintive "Social Competence." Though some PB&J fans may miss the band's tight, punchy sound, that's exactly the point of THE LAST TYCOON: it's a chance for Moren to explore the "quiet is the new loud" credo set forth by fellow Scandinavians Kings of Convenience, and he rises to the task with wonderfully low-key verve.
