Highlighting the vitality and deep grooves of vintage 1960s and `70s soul, this useful Rhino Records primer revisits such genre-defining recordings as Wilson Pickett's infectious "Land of 1000 Dances," the Bar Kays' unstoppable "Soul Finger," and the Average White Band's churning "Pick Up the Pieces." But, unusually for a best-of, it also digs a little deeper to unearth the jazz and R&B guitar ace Cornell Dupree's unimpeachably funky 1974 instrumental burner "Teasin'," the New Orleans piano legend Professor Longhair's down-and-dirty "Hey Little Girl," and a couple of rare gems in Graham Central Station's "Ghetto" and the obscure `70s funk outfit Black Heat's instrumental workout, "Love the Life You Live."
