It's been several years since the import bins overflowed with what was affectionately called "junk shop" glam -- a string of compilations digging into the no-hit wonders that flourished (or otherwise) around the heavy hitters of Britain's early-'70s glam rock explosion. But the collections that were put together only scratched the surface of what was out there, a point proved when Blitzing the Ballroom bursts into the room and serves up some of the best glitter rock you've probably never heard. A few of the names are familiar from past collections and elsewhere -- Stumpy, for instance, or Jonathan King's Sakkarin pseudonym. And the tunes may seem familiar too, as few of these bands were what you would call startlingly original, which means that where the likes of Mud, Slade, and Sweet once went, Shambles, Tiger, Angel, Panther, Winston, and Giggles would be following. But still you cannot find fault with Blitzing the Ballroom, as it blasts through 20 solid stompers that are no less memorable, magic, and meritorious as the majority of glam discs that did hit the charts back then. And a few of them are even better. So don't be shy; let's blitz that ballroom -- and after you, with the mascara and sequins! ~ Dave Thompson
