Pianist Jordi Rossy's debut as a leader has him just as much up front in the mix of this contemporary modern jazz and Latin-based music as his partner, organist Albert Sanz. It sounds as if these musicians are influenced by the piano/organ duet recordings of Larry Young and Joe Chambers, where the same instruments were utilized while employing overdubbing. Here it is real-time music, with drummer R.J. Miller as the third wheel, playing in a style that is, at times, seductive, visceral, understated, or molasses thick. This is a program entirely made up of original music manifested in subtle shadings, with the two keyboardists feeding light motifs to each other. The slow and slinky "Sexy Time" lives up to its title via the lubricated delivery of Sanz, "Tainos" is a perfect 4 a.m. song, slow and lugubrious, while "Loving Tone" has a curious piano affectation played against longing organ in no time, going into a blues ballad. The percussively tapped-out light bossa "El Bardo" and faux waltz "Metamorfosis" both stretch the chords of Rossy and Sanz respectively, the latter track contrasting Rossy's delicate piano. The livelier title cut adds trumpeter Felix Rossy and tenor saxophonist Enrique Oliver in a jazzier but static framework. Where the compassionate discourse of this recording is undeniable, as well as its depth of emotional content, one gets the feeling of anticipation, with room for more expressionism down the road. If there is a second recording in the offering from these fine young musicians, it should be welcomed with open, loving arms. ~ Michael G. Nastos|
