here aren't many tuba-playing leaders in jazz, but Chicago's Mike Walbridge is one, and he's been at it for about four decades. As leader of the Chicago Footwarmers (and a member of the Salty Dogs), Walbridge has been keeping the flames of traditional jazz burning in the Windy City. CRAZY RHYTHM presents two sessions recorded in the mid 1960s (for the Blackbird label) plus material recorded in 2007, giving a nice "then-and-now" representation of the band. The Footwarmers' bristling, heavily rhythmic, and fancy-free approach recalls that of classic jazz without any heavy-handed stridency.|
