A monumental sonic document, the six-disc FOR YOU box set navigates a transitional period for Rick Nelson, the time between leaving behind pop-idol (and huge hitmaker) status and launching into full-fledged country rock with his Stone Canyon Band. You can hear Nelson's vision evolving over the course of this luxuriously appointed set. His earliest Decca recordings err on the side of pop commerciality, but in due course he's digging into the country sounds that had already been presaged by his pre-Decca rockabilly leanings. By the time the late '60s roll around, Nelson is heard experimenting with everything from psychedelic pop to Bob Dylan and Tim Hardin covers and proto country rock. These weren't necessarily Nelson's most celebrated years, but they are crucial to the development of his music.
