Respected Dutch producer Nicolay (known for his work with Phonte as one-half of the Foreign Exchange) combines with Houston-based underground MC Kay Jackson for a collaboration project reminiscent of hip-hop's golden age on TIME:LINE. Marrying a handful of varied production tendencies, Nicolay moves from classic 1960s soul and lofty, orchestral strings to high-energy soaring synths to spindly, guitar-driven dancehall, occasionally blending in neo-soul background vocals over 12 fresh tracks. On the lyrical front, Kay finesses the mic with next-level lyrics, spinning wordy cautionary tales (such as the anti-coke track "The Lights" and the anti-violence track "The Gunshot") and love-struck ghetto ballads ("Tight Eyes").
